I’ve been a regular visitor of Katie Yang’s film photoblog. Okay I visit her blog daily, sometimes even twice or thrice a day because I learn a lot form her, plus I keep going back to her camera and film guides. She also has so many friends that keep film photo blogs which I regularly visit as well, so her blog is like my gateway to other film enthusiasts.
This morning, I saw her post regarding the August Break by Susannah Conway. The thing with Katie’s posts, she includes so many links on them that I really do visit especially when I’m extra curious like today. I thought that it (August Break) was just like Spring break when everybody goes on vacation, but apparently, it is actually
“a community project that has no real rules – the idea is to simply take a photograph every day for the whole of August”
I know what you’re thinking, this is exactly like the other monthly photo challenges you see on social networking sites. It also has daily prompts so you have an idea what to take a photo of just in case you run out of things to shoot. Sounds even more like this particular challenge that I’ve been a big fan of for a long time now. Well it’s because it was inspired by it, Chantelle’s #fmsphotoaday.
A few weeks into shooting photos using my beloved film camera , I had this “impossible” idea to do the FMS Photo A Day Challenge using it. I say it’s impossible since I usually don’t finish these challenges and it’s a film camera so I won’t get to post daily on instagram using the famous hashtag so it basically just defeats the whole purpose of the thing.
When I found this new challenge however, that little flame of an idea got reignited in me and I thought, why not? After all, Susannah made it even more flexible than its counterparts by not imposing rules at all. In her own mighty words, she said:
You can use any camera. You could shoot every day or every other day or just on weekends. You can share your photos or just enjoy taking them without sharing. You can start and not finish. You can join in at the end.
Anything goes, loves!
So I thought, why not use my film camera, take daily photos and by the end of the month, just post everything on the flicker group and in my photo blog. It would be more exciting and different from my previous experiences, plus, I get to use my last film, a black and white one once and for all.
I cannot wait to do this and this time, I want to finish it. It would be my little August Project, my first try at shooting in B&W (which everyone says is sooooo much easier than shooting in color film) and something I’d like to fully commit myself to. So here’s to a very exciting month for me! I hope I get to go to really great places this August!
